Ensenada Race

Hey Everyone,

Our delivery goes well. We are about 180 miles North of the BVI's now, and the weather is right on forecast. Something that we always like!! Beam reaching in the trade winds in 15-16 knots. Very nice!!

Just before leaving, I read something about a boat that sunk doing the Ensenada Race?? There were not many details, but if anyone can find some info on the internet and relay the basics our way, we would sure appreciate it. Everyone onboard has done that race and we are very interested in whatever happened.

thanks,

-Jim

  1. Hi, Guys - no one is really sure yet what exactly happened to Aegean, 37 footer, but it disappeared from race tracking Saturday, early a.m. near Coronado. Suspected from debris field that it was hit by much larger vessel. 3 bodies recovered; Kevin Rudolph, William Reed Johnson (Torrance), Joe Lester Stewart (Florida). Still missing and searched suspended for owner Theo Mayromatis of Redondo. Very few details yet.

Spot says you did 9 nm last hour from 5:15PM Cali time. Weather looks great for a fast passage. Weird to steer 0?

Guy who apparently got run over won his class (cruising) in 2009 and 2011. He has not been found. Hunter 37. Sailing Anarchy detectives have identified two suspect freighters.

The tracker doesn't lie: The Hunter 37 Aegean, which was feared to have been run over by a large commercial vessel during the Newport to Ensenada race, actually ran aground on the North Coronado Island, killing four crew members. A nasty bit of rock, and with the decent sized swell running during the race, it is not hard to imagine the sort of carnage rendered, at least to the boat. We still aren't sure how the hell they ended up there though... Click here to expand on the track.
